CAPITALIZE O N AW KW ARD SPACE
The Gaynors mined an under-the-stairs area for
i
a wet bar and snack station. By recessing shelves six
;
inches into a side wall, they also gained a mini pantry.
2
BE RESOURCEFUL The backsplash was cobbled
together from square and rectangular tiles left
over from a bathroom. Stacy drew a chalk triangle on
the floor and played around with the random pieces to
figure out a pattern. Another thrifty move: The granite
countertop is a remnant.
3
GRAB LIGHT W HERE YO U CAN
An interior window draws light through the play
area into a new guest bedroom. Pale walls also keep
the basement bright.
4
BE PRACTICAL Stacy simply painted the
concrete floor (she added an anti-slip additive
to the paint), then defined and dressed up the open
spaces with durable indoor-outdoor area rugs.
